Vibraphonic Festival 2015:
Despite the fact that funding has all but dried up, next year's Vibraphonic Festival looks as though it's going to be just as diverse as it has been in previous years. From the point of view of jazz lovers I think we're going to do pretty well, albeit that both bands already booked are trios - but it's worth pointing out that it's pretty expensive booking bands anyway, especially when you also add in the cost of their riders (see below!).Go Go Penguin:
Although they were nominated for the 2014 Mercury prize they didn't get within a sniff of winning it. The Manchester Based trio do, however, blow up a mighty good sound as can be heard on their debut album "Fanfares". However a change of personell has made them even more adventurous as can be heard on "v2.0" their most recent album, and as they're embarking on a huge British and European tour it will be a great chance to see what they're about.Troyka:
Will be touring a new album both here and in Europe. By mistake ( I hope it was anyway!) we got sent a copy of their European rider. Initial thoughts were "We wanted to hire the band, not buy them", so some judicious and hard bargaining has substantially reduced their requirements. We've decided that this is going to be a stand-up gig, partly because they are L-O-U-D, but also because in addition to being cerebral they are also pretty good for moving around to - even for the elderly! For both these gigs there will be local support bands- and if you're reading this and might be interested do get in touch. There's no money (natch!) but the chance to play in front of an informed and interested audience.( if you are interested get in touch a info@edgeofjazz giving details of your bands line-up, and if possible attaching an MP3 of performance.
Further ahead I've already mentioned Marius Neset which will be a great chance to experience some Scandinavian style cool jazz. There are all sorts of other jazz related possibilities at the Phoenix, as well as the other venues around the City - watch out especially for events at the intimate Hope Hall in Wonford. More later in the month.
